The code allows the attacker to take control of the machine that runs the vulnerable FTP server and can easily be automated and turned into a mass attack tool by combining it with a scanning tool.

Unfortunately, even anonymous write access is good enough to make the server vulnerable, but nevertheless this cuts down on the number of potential targets.

The NTFS solution seems to be the way to go for users that cannot make a bigger change to their FTP services and has minimal impact, so it is a good interim solution until a real patch comes out.

We dont expect this problem to be addressed in next weeks Patch Tuesday release as the Development and QA time are too long; it makes sense to prepare for a longer period without a real solution.

An alternate way of dealing with the problem is to evaluate whether a robust FTP server with more granular management capabilities can be deployed instead of the one built-in within IIS.

This makes it even simpler for IT administrators to demonstrate the existence of the exploit and argue for the deployment of an alternative FTP server.

An example - the nmap scan for a machine on a pentesting challenge site has come back with this: 21tcp open ftp Microsoft ftpd.

Warning: OSScan results may be unreliable because we could not find at least 1 open and 1 closed port.

Ive tried using exploit-db, searchsploit, msfconsoles search, and one or two others to try and vulnerabilities based on search terms like ftp, iis, server 2008, etc.

As I say, Im quite new to this and I imagine Im not doing it as effectively as I could be, so Id be interested to see what other people can find based on the information above, and how they found it.

Im still experimenting with it, but Im not sure whether its what Im looking for given that my aim is to gain access to the box to retrieve the contents of a couple of text files.

I say that because I havent managed to gain access using it, but Im not sure yet whether thats just me not being familiar with the aux modules yet.

Show options shows that I just need to set the RHOST, which Ive done.

If this were an exploit, Id enter something like set payload windowsmeterpreterreversetcp now, but set payload.

That seems a bit strange, because I get a whole list of payloads if I type show payloads Edit - yeah, so Ive realised properly since posting that aux modules dont have payloads.

If I just try using run as it is, I get this: msf auxiliary(iis75ftpdiacbof) run.

Dirbuster and other crawling-type stuff is something I still need to learn about properly, so this seems like a good point to get up to speed (even though I think uploading something via FTP is ultimately going to be the way in.

Also never hurts to spin up openvas or nessus and let it try to automate some of your enumeration.

Thanks for the dirbuster recommendation, thats something I havent actually played with yet at all.

Time to add it to the tools.
